The Curriculum and Assessment Committee will consist of no fewer than twelve (12) members who will be appointed for staggered three-year terms. It will be co-chaired by a representative from NYSCSS and a representative from NYS4A. Its function is to analyze and disseminate information and developments pertaining to social studies education at the elementary, middle, and secondary levels; review curriculum documents and assessment tools; publish resource, methodological, and curricular materials; focus on issues related to the ongoing professional development of social studies teachers; and perform additional functions as designated by the Board of Directors and President. In the 2016-17 school year, the Curriculum & Assessment Committee sponsored two webinars for NYSCSS members: “Teaching about Syria and the Rise of Isis” with the I am Syria Foundation, and “How do you know it’s fake? Helping Students Develop News Literacy,” with the Center for News Literacy at Stony Brook University. The Committee also participated in the development of the program for the 2017 NYSCSS/NYS4A Summer Institute: Making it Real in the Social Studies Classroom held in July 2017 at the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa, Fairport, NY.
